Faneuil Hall Marketplace has been the heart of Boston since 1972. It has functioned as a market place and a meeting hall.
A wealthy merchant Peter Faneuil, sponsored a considerable portion of the hall. The center soon became a hub of activity. It is here that half the battle for America's independence was won. Fiery speeches by American patriots were made here. Both Samuel Adams and George Washington have graced this building. Now, it boasts of more than 50 shops, 14 restaurants, and 40 food stalls.
This five storied building complex includes a lively market place in the first floor, a meeting hall in the second floor where debates are still held while the fourth floor houses various artifacts from history.
It is a center of tourist attraction because of its historical importance. The market in the first floor sells exquisite handicraft and traditional Boston memorabilia (t- shirts, magnets, view books, etc). It is better to desist from tasting food which besides being bland is over priced.
The Company, which was begun in 1638 for the defense of the colony, has operated in Faneuil Hall since 1746.
